A Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos on Friday sentenced a 20-year-old ex-convict, Moses Olaoye, to six months in prison for stealing a Techno phone valued at N48,000.

The convict, who is a cobbler and resides in the Bariga area of Lagos, was convicted after he pleaded guilty to a count charge of stealing.

Magistrate  E.N. Ojuromi who sentenced Olaoye did not give him an option to pay a fine.

At the sentencing, he begged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying that he was aware of his wrongdoings and had learnt his lesson from the last incarceration.

”It hunger that pushed me back to stealing and nobody has agreed to employ me because of my conviction record,” he pleaded.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure told the court that the convict committed the offence at 8.30a.m. on Sept. 5, at Okuta roundabout, bariga, Lagos. He said that Olaoye stole a Techno L9 plus mobile phone valued at N48,000 from one Mr Afolabi Musa.

Oriabure said that the convict who was a former secondary school classmate of the complainant stole the phone from his pocket. He added that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

  1. Chai! He really did wrong by stealing just because of hunger, but I believe after he spends 6months in jail and come out alive he will learn never to do such again… I really feel for him, a 20years old boy?

  2. Comment: so sad for the poor man, how has hunger pushed you to steal phone? phone na food?? pure and rubbish nonsense.

  3. Ex-convict

I see people in this platform that God is giving them vision to evangelize good morals to people in the prison custody

    This guys needs help

Government needs to rehabilitate this convict so they wont go back to their offence

If you ask me now can i employ an ex-convict its under probability

  4. It’s Soo bad how young youths engage in crime. Nice verdict from the judge but the convict should have been given a fee penalty. Even though jailed, he should be subjected to psychological assessment because people commit crimes as a result of certain psychological trauma.

  5. Comment: he did a bad thing to steal such. Though I wish the judgement was a little lesser, but I hope he learnt his lesson

  6. This guy should be forgiven cus he just made a statement that, people has refused to employ him because he was an X.convict, please this kind of case should be reconsidered for the Boi to have a better life.
